Do you believe in magic?

Magic is the ancient and absolute science of nature and her laws.

A.L.Constant, The History of Magic, London, 1922

Ask the average person if they believe in magic. You could likely be scoffed at it being nonsense. Other people might look perplexed, never having given it a thought. Yet others might declare it the work of the devil. An enlightened few may believe in magic.

Everything is or can be a magical practice.

Have you ever crossed your fingers or tossed salt over your left shoulder or thrown rice at a wedding couple for good luck?

Have you ever entertained the notion of seven years of bad luck if you have broken a mirror?

How about carrying a rabbit’s foot for good luck, or tossing coins in a fountain or making a wish upon a falling star? Have you left money for the tooth fairy?

You get the idea. If you have done any of these, you have participated in small acts of magic.

Magic is a natural force

It is neutral, not associated with any religion.

Magic is the projection of natural energies to produce needed effects

Scott Cunningham

All reality and all matter are composed of vibrating subatomic particles of Universal energy that form patterns.

We create mental energy with thoughts and visualization. When energy is released, it causes a ripple effect bringing about change in Universal energy from which everything originates.

This ripple effect is much like a tidal wave damaging land far from the earthquake that caused it or the water ripples in a lake created by skipping stones.

It is with energy and intent to create a change that all-encompassing energy frequencies are altered.

Magic and science

Science is catching up with magic. Magic follows the rules of chaos theory, neuroscience, and quantum physics.

In the book, The Hidden Messages Of Water Masaru Emoto reports that the crystalline formations in water change when exposed to negative or positive thoughts, and music.

This study reminds me of the reviews published about plants having better growth and health when talked to.

the universe

magic and the universe

Magic is an act in union with cosmic energy. It is an act of personal willpower and visualization. You can open the door to the all-encompassing power of the Universe by building up energy, visualizing an outcome, and directing that energy outward. Magic can work in a formal ceremony or small personal ritual, by lighting a candle and allowing the message to be carried to the Universe by the power of fire.

Doing spell work can be done by doing something simple to manipulate energy. It is optional to cast enchantments inside a circle (typically 9 feet in diameter) as well, including crystals, fire, herbs, oils accompanied by chanting, dance, and music along with lengthy incantations to build and amplify energy. Elaborate ceremonies are usually done by covens or reserved for more substantial acts of magic. Ultimately it is the use of your power that gets the attention of the universe.

reasons to perform magic

  • pursue and complete a goal
  • perform a healing act
  • banish and remove blocks to a goal
  • attract opportunities and possibilities
  • achieve a personal transformation

I am fortunate to live in the country. I have a secluded secret garden on my property with a 9-foot permanent circle and a fire pit in the center. Each time I work magic inside the garden, a little energy remains. It is truly a sacred magical space.

Wiccan rules of magic

It is wrong to do magic to harm another. It will return threefold, what you send out returns to you.

Doing magic for another without their consent is also wrong, even if you mean well. I made this mistake when I did a healing spell for a friend’s illness. I became dreadfully sick.

  • To know that it works and your outcome will manifest, usually within three months.
  • To dare to work hard and take the risk of an unexpected outcome or failure. Sometimes the Universe says no.
  • To will and use your power to bring about a change.
  • Remain silent about your magical work. To share it is to lose personal power and direction.

The Mind

Magic lives inside of us. Inside of us with our thinking and our actions. Begin to recognize your conscious and unconscious worlds. Your conscious reality is your daily waking life. The mind that lies beyond the material world is your unconscious mind, which awakens during sleep and meditative states, sometimes delivering dreams or visions. At times the unconscious mind breaks through to your conscious awareness in the form of hunches, gut feelings, just feeling you know something or synchronicity. You should listen to these messages. They are a message from your primitive unconscious mind.

During magic, we create a meditative state. We are communicating with the unconscious brain, where we create images in the mind. These images need to be specific to the goal you are pursuing. The visualization should include all of the senses—hearing, smell, taste, sight, etc. You must visualize the event as if it has already occurred. Never visualize the problem. The Universe does not perceive good from the bad. It only accepts the pictures you send to it with your energy.

Practice meditation and visualization to prepare for magical work.

It is important to develop a positive mind. What you put out, even thoughts, you get back. Replace your internal dialogue with positive thoughts. No negative self talk either.

magic begins at home

Magic is part of life. Energies are blocked in a house that is not in your style, or your home is a mess. A house in this condition is not suitable for magical workings.

Clear your house of anything that is not beautiful or useful. Donate what you can of these things and take the rest out with the trash. Repair anything in the house that requires fixing.

Once your house is orderly, it is time to clean. Deep cleaning is necessary, followed by a clearing of negative energies with a sage smudging stick.

Surrounding ourselves with nature and symbolism, we connect with the unconscious mind heightening psychic awareness and creating a charming atmosphere. Examples of some of these items are plants, dried herbs, crystals, a diffuser utilizing essential oils ( not fragrance oils ), color usage, statues or emblems that represent a male and female deity

It wouldn’t hurt to bring your yard into order as well. Mow, weed, trim and plant some new shrubs, flowers, and herbs for magical use.

spellwork

Anyone can practice magic. You don’t have to be a member or part of any religion or spiritual group. It takes study, concentration, time, and experience to become really proficient. Working magic can be quite mentally exhausting.

Magical energy can enchant inanimate objects, crystals, talismans, amulets, and tools. Magic tools and items used for a variety of reasons such as protection and good luck spells are more powerful when enchanted tools are employed.

There are a great many books printed with spells and incantations. Check out a few and get the idea of how to go about it. You will have greater success if you write your spells. The Universe favors shorter spells that rhyme.

It is imperative to be very specific when working a spell, or the universe may answer you in a way you didn’t anticipate.

Perform your magic, believe in it wholeheartedly, let it go to do its work. Don’t expect instant results. It can take three months for a spell to come to fruition. Don’t forget to work with the Universe if it presents you with an opportunity.

The moon and stars

Timing spell work to astronomical and astrological influences significantly improves your success. Work in harmony with nature.

Who isn’t familiar with the Farmer’s Almanac? It instructs times for various gardening and farming activities, including the best times to fish based on the moon phases and astrological signs the moon is in at any given time on the calendar. It predicts weather events. Have you ever heard of the Farmer’s Almanac referred to as witchcraft? Of course not. It is a well-known fact that the moon and planets influence things here on earth. Take advantage of this information to make your spells more powerful.

moon magic

The new moon is a time for spells for new beginnings and change.

The waxing moon ( getting larger ) is a time for spells of expansion, growth, and productivity.

The full moon is the most powerful for magic—it is a time for spells of fulfillment, love, healing, and summoning positive energy.

The waning moon ( getting smaller ) is a time for spells of banishment and endings.

The astrological signs align with specific goals. Time your spell to align with the phase of the moon, and the sign the moon is in and have the power of both in your favor.

In essence, magic is the art of clearly focusing your will to help create a change or transition of some kind.

Arin Murphy-Hiscock

Science has explained many things ancient indigenous tribes attributed to signs from gods such as illness, crop failures, comets, rainbows, locust invasions, and severe weather events.

At one time telephone service, tv reception, cell phones, and electricity would have seemed like acts of magic.

Science is beginning to catch up with how magic works through the study of quarks and quantum physics.

Just because you don’t believe it doesn’t mean it isn’t true
