Beltane is a time of perfect balance and perfect harmony. May 1st marks the division of the year, the end of winter, and the beginning of summer. The winter ends, and there is exploding energy of green growth and creativity.

A Wiccan Magical Beltane lifestyle includes the bawdy, fire festival, an exuberant celebration of the return of the cycle of life, and fertility. Wiccans enjoy music, singing, dancing, feasting, and romance.

A common theme throughout Pagan lore is the story of the female Goddess making a journey to the underworld during the winter half of the year. The female Goddess returns at Beltane and brings the fertility of the earth with her.

What are the main themes of Beltane?

A pregnant woman in a long white dress wearing a flower crown
A hand holding a crystal ball looking at the rising sun
  • A celebration of the return of the sun and the beginning of new life
  • Fertility, of the tribe, the livestock, and the crops in the fields.
  • A celebration of all things feminine

Personal introspection

We are all always precisely where we need to be for the necessary lessons we need to learn.

Now is an excellent time to take a personal inventory of the reverence within you regarding compassion, honor, beauty that surrounds you, inner strength, and your personal power.

Wiccan Beltane lifestyle Traditions and Activities

Pilgrimage to natural springs

  • Natural springs are visited to throw fresh flowers and coins in the water as an offering because it brings prosperity. You can honor this tradition by visiting streams, rivers, waterfalls, or ponds and leaving coins and flowers. If that is not possible, you can make it as simple as tossing coins and flowers in a fountain for good luck, most noteworthy, this is where this practice originated.

Flowers everywhere

  • Decorating with flowers is everywhere. It is a visual representation of the magical return of life. Baskets of florals and white candles decorate altars and hearths.
  • It is a tradition to gift your neighbors or lover with a flower basket left or hung from their front doorway.
  • The Victorians adopted this practice by exchanging what are known as poseys; small bouquets of flowers. The flowers chosen for these baskets of posys can carry the messages through the meanings of flowers.

Beltane bonfires

A bonfire is lit at dusk the night before Beltane representing the returning warmth of the sun. The fire is allowed to burn through the night until dawn when the sun rises. Saved ashes from the Beltane fire are collected to use in magical protection charms. Spreading the ashes from the Beltane fire over the fields was believed to promote the fertility of the crops. Today we know that ashes contain nitrogen, which would benefit plants.

The Wiccan Beltane May Pole

  • The Beltane May Pole is the most striking image of Beltane. A ten-foot pole is erected, preferably from the Yule tree, saved for this purpose. The pole is a phallic symbol. Red and white ribbons six feet in length are attached alternately to the top of the pole. The red ribbons represent the sun and our life’s blood, and the white ribbons represent the virginal quality of life. Mounted at the top of the pole is a flower wreath. Sometimes a flowered wreath is also placed at the base of the pole.
  • Dancing around the May Pole represents the concept of death and resurrection. Men take a red ribbon, and women take a white ribbon. The women and men move in opposite directions around the pole, creating a spiral weave of the ribbons representing the magical spiral of life.

Erecting a May Pole is a significant undertaking.

I find that it is much easier to construct a miniature version and display it on your altar. This small version would also serve as a terrific centerpiece for your serving table at a Beltane gathering.

Beltane Lifestyle activities

  • Sheep shearing, dyeing of wool, and spinning of the wool took place at Beltane.
  • It was a time of gathering herbs for drying and storage.
  • Gathering and pressing of flowers.
  • Divination, part of a Wiccan magical lifestyle, was a significant feature of Beltane, particularly scrying. Like Samhain, this time of the year, the veil between the worlds was thin. People had a desire to know what the coming seasons would bring to their crops, their matings, and their prosperity. Traditionally scrying was performed upon still waters such as a pool along a creek. You can use a crystal ball as well.

Romance during a Beltane celebration

  • Seeking a mate is perhaps the most critical activity during Beltane.
  • Fertility and continuing the tribe was an essential activity. Traditionally a mate is chosen. They then locate a secluded spot in an outside area. They remain awake all night, awaiting the dawn of the sun. The couple pursues their lovemaking above all, hoping for a pregnancy. If a pregnancy results from their mating, the couple are married in June at the Midsummer celebration.

The Beltane Fairies

The veil between the worlds is thin at this time of year, and fairies are more active.

Fairies are mischievous spirit elementals that can help or hurt. If you choose to engage in fairy magic, do so with care. The results can be unpredictable.

It is essential to keep your fairies happy and not offend them. Fairies are attracted to gardens with foxglove and strongly scented flowers. Fairies appreciate a well-tended garden. You want to keep them happy. Therefore you should give an offering to them, such as cookies and honey. You can place offerings at the base of trees.

Discovering a ring of mushrooms could indicate you have fairies. Fairies gather and celebrate at night in these rings.

The Fairy Godmother is a guardian spirit associated with the fates. She provides protection, assistance, and guidance.

Wiccan Beltane Lifestyle Crafts

a women wearing a chaplet, a ring of flowers around the head

To make a chaplet you will need two green pipe cleaners, florist wire, florist tape, 9 inches long 1/4 inch ribbons, and enough flowers to cover your chaplet. You may use fresh or silk flowers.

Twist together your two pipe cleaners to make a 9-inch circle. Once the ring is complete, you can begin placing flowers using the florist wire. Attach the ribbons to the lower back of the chaplet. Wrap the florist tape around the ring weaving in and out of the flowers and ribbon. The floral tape will give your chaplet a finished appearance.

Create a Beltane Wreath

A floral Beltane wreath

You will need a grapevine wreath in the size of your choosing, florist wire, greenery such as rosemary or ivy, ribbons, and enough flowers to cover your wreath. Start by wrapping your wreath in the greenery and attaching it with the florist wire. Use florist wire to attach your flowers around your wreath. Tie your ribbons to the lower part of the wreath so that they are hanging downward.

The ribbons are a talisman for protection.

Beltane Oatcakes

Wiccan Beltane oatcakes

Out of all the foods associated with Beltane, every reference I checked included oatcakes. I was able to find many recipes that were original but unappetizing.

I also found recipes that had added various spices.

My solution was to create my recipe to make them taste better than the original, but not too far removed from the original recipes. My oatcakes turned out to be easy to make and are surprisingly tasty.

They are round-shaped to represent the sun and would be perfect for a gathering or use in a ceremony.

Servings 20, 2 1/2 inch oatcakes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup real butter
  • 1 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  • Combine flour, baking soda, salt, and brown sugar
  • Add softened butter and stir till well combined. I did mine by hand, but I am sure it would work just as well in a food processor or stand mixer.
  • Mix in rolled oats and combine well.
  • Add the milk and mix until a soft dough forms.
  • Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to a 1/2 inch thickness.
  • Cut out circles with a 2 1/2 inch biscuit cutter or an inverted glass.
  • Bake on a parchment-lined cookie sheet for 18 minutes at 350 degrees F
  • Cool on a wire rack.

A Wiccan Beltane party

Beltane is all about fun. First of all, you can use so many ideas for just a family gathering or an all-out party.

Beltane Costuming

Nothing delights a child more than wearing fairy wings at Beltane. It seems like I have even seen them for sale at the Dollar Store, so they are easy to find.

Certainly, I don’t think anything makes a woman feel more feminine and romantic than wearing a long dress. Therefore, both of these ideas are a must and would start your Beltane gathering off as a hit.

You could make chaplet flower headbands ahead of time and hand them out as guests arrive. Better yet, you could plan on making the chaplets part of your party activities and have the ladies and girls make their own.

It is traditional to wear ankle bells to chase away mischievous fairies. Ankle bracelets with ” jingle” bells purchased at the Dollar Store are easy to make. Just thread a few bells on a thin ribbon. Hence, hand them out for your guests to wear when they arrive.

Green is the color of Beltane, so wear green clothing, green jewelry, green in your hair, and green makeup, too, if you dare. Additionally, stones associated with Wiccan Beltane are malachite, emerald, rose quartz, and tourmaline. There are others also, but these are my favorites.

A Barbecue is perfect

A great barbecue with Mead or May Day Wine punch to accompany the food would be yummy.

Hand-cranked vanilla ice cream would be an excellent project for the children. The ice cream topped with red fruit like cherries, strawberries, and raspberries with an oatcake would be a divine dessert.

Beltane Decorations

A patio or outdoor space decorated with fairy lights would be magical. A patio fountain could serve as a coin offering for prosperity, and floating flowers or candles would be delightful. Lots of flower decorations and a May Pole centerpiece on your serving area with a green tablecloth would set the theme.

Don’t forget the music. It is essential to set the mood.

Plan a Sleep Over

Plan to spend the night outside in sleeping bags or piles of pillows and blankets. Study the stars. Set up solar yard lights around your sleeping area.

Enjoy a bonfire. Also, later in the evening, marshmallows on a stick could be roasted. If you can’t arrange a bonfire, a patio firepit could serve the purpose as well.
